1. Kaaterskill Falls – Catskills

Location: Haines Falls, NY

Fees: None, Free

Directions: Head east on Route 23A from the village of Haines Falls. Follow signs to the trailhead.

Swimming: Swimming is not recommended due to safety concerns, but the views are worth the hike.

2. Taughannock Falls – Finger Lakes

Location: within Taughannock Falls State Park in Ulysses, NY

Directions: Located in Taughannock Falls State Park, accessible via Route 89 from Ithaca.

Swimming: While swimming is not allowed at the base, the park has a swimming area near the upper falls or in the lake.

3. Genesee Falls at Letchworth State Park – The Grand Canyon of the East

Location: Letchworth State Park in Castile, NY

Fees: Park Fees Apply

Directions: Enter the park via the Castile entrance off of Route 39.

Swimming: Swimming is not permitted in the falls area, but the park offers other recreational activities.

Hiking Ease: 3 main falls that are a few hundred feet to a half mile walking distance from the parking lot. Some stairs required for the lower falls.

4. Buttermilk Falls – Ithaca

Location: Buttermilk Falls State park in Ithaca, NY

Fees: Park Fees Apply

Directions: Located in Buttermilk Falls State Park, off Route 13 south of Ithaca.

Swimming: Visitors can cool off in the natural pool at the base of the falls.

Hiking Ease: Family-friendly short walk to the falls with options to take longer trails.

5. Rainbow Falls at Ausable Chasm – Adirondacks

Location: Keeseville, NY

Fees: None to view the falls from the bridge, but entrance fees apply to access “Ausable Chasm”

Directions: Follow Route 9 North to Ausable Chasm.

Swimming: While swimming is not allowed at the falls, guided adventure tours offer tubing.

Hiking Ease: The falls are visible from a short walk to the bridge depending on parking availability, there are other hiking trails within Ausable Chasm.
